Beckham tastes first derby win with Galaxy

David Beckham was delighted to taste derby victory for the first time since moving to Major League Soccer after his Los Angeles Galaxy beat Chivas USA 5-2 on Saturday.

The midfielder helped LA avenge two heavy defeats to the same opponents last season and saw his side climb to an overall record of 2-2-1 and second place in the Western Conference.

"It was a very good team performance against a good opponent," he said.

"It is always very satisfying to win a derby game because of what it means to the club and the fans. It could be the best night I have had since I came over here. I am delighted for everyone at the Galaxy and my team mates."

Last year Beckham played in a 3-0 defeat to Chivas, ending the game almost out on his feet following an exhausting return trip from international duty with England.

He came through this contest with no injury concerns, though, and a Landon Donovan hat-trick and two goals from Alan Gordon sealed the win for Los Angeles. Sacha Kljestan and Ante Razov got the goals for Chivas.

Ronaldo named PFA's Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year.

The 23-year-old Manchester United winger retains the trophy after scoring 38 goals so far this season. "I feel very happy. It is a great moment, it is an honour, a pleasure," said the Portuguese star.

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas picked up the young player of the year award, but - like Gunners colleague Emmanuel Adebayor, Pompey keeper David James and Liverpool pair Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard - was beaten by the Portugal international.

Ronaldo was also among the nominees for the Young Player of the Year award, which he won last year, but Fabregas won the junior award ahead of Torres, Micah Richards, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young.

Ronaldo did not attend the event, as he is preparing for his club's Champions League semi-final second leg with Barcelona on Tuesday night, but was presented with the gong by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"When you work all season to play good, to do something for the team, to do your contribution for the team and then at the end of the season the PFA give you this award, it is a great moment, it is an honour, a pleasure," said Ronaldo.

"It is a great motivation to carry on like that, to work more and get better. I feel very good. But it's not just my award: my team-mates have helped me a lot this season. They give me good passes to score goals."

Ronaldo revealed that he cast his vote for Arsenal striker Adebayor, but believes justice was done. "I voted for Adebayor because I think he has had a great season as well," he said. "But you have many players who have had a good season - Torres, Fabregas, many players. But I think I deserve to win!"

For his part, Fabregas said "I'm very proud. It's a very prestigious trophy. Football is a collective game and you prefer to win trophies with team-mates but it's always nice to have this type of award. I dedicate it to my team-mates because without them I would not have won."

BBC broadcaster and former England and Blackpool full-back Jimmy Armfield received the Merit Award for his services to the game, to go with the Outstanding Contribution Award he was presented with earlier in the year at the Football League Awards.

Manchester United VS. Barcelona Preview

Roma's Totti could miss start of next season

AS Roma striker Francesco Totti could miss the start of next season after undergoing a knee operation, the club doctor said on Sunday.

The 31-year-old, troubled by niggles all season, suffered a cruciate ligament injury in title-chasing Roma's 1-1 draw with Livorno on Saturday.

"Professor Pierpaolo Mariani will perform a surgical operation to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament, which will take place in the afternoon," Roma club doctor Mario Brozzi said in a statement.

Brozzi also told reporters: "In the past Roma have dealt with these kinds of injuries. We remember in the cases of Emerson and (Eusebio) Di Francesco they returned to action after four months."

A similar recovery time for Totti would mean he would be back in August but would miss most of pre-season training.

Some Italian media reports have speculated Totti, who broke his leg in 2006, could be out for up to six months.

"I am a bit scared because I heard a crack," Totti told reporters as he arrived at the club clinic on Sunday. "I will definitely return stronger than before."

Totti, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, has retired from international football so would have missed Euro 2008 in any case.

Second-placed Roma are battling champions Inter Milan in the race for the Serie A title.

Coach Luciano Spalletti normally plays with only one striker and Montenegro's Mirko Vucinic, who scored on Saturday, looks poised to fill in for Totti in their remaining four league games.

Roma, the subject of a possible takeover bid, are also in the semi-finals of the Italian Cup.

Ferdinand agrees new Man United deal - $260,000 USD a week

England defender Rio Ferdinand has agreed to sign a new five-year contract with Manchester United, his agent told British newspaper the Daily Express.

"This new deal will take him beyond (age) 34, but it won't be his last contract and in all probability it won't be his last contract at Manchester United," agent Pini Zahavi said.

The daily said the 29-year-old centre-back's deal was worth 130,000 pounds ($260,000) a week.
